Dear Mr. Dr. T.,

You are world famous for your split ring marvels. I have always liked butted 14g rings but I've never tried split rings. Are they tedious to put together as they seem? Do you still use normal pliers to put them together? Are the rings expensive? Can you point an amatuer split ring smith (mailler?) in the right direction?

Your enlightenment would be greatly appreciated.

Another fan,
Alex Link

P.S. I've never seen such a devoted mailler as yourself, if I may gush. You're truly the mailler we all wish we could be.

Hmmmm, I agree Dr. T does some great things with split rings, but wouldn't this message be better as a pm sent to said member? Just a suggestion.

i've thought about it, and it seems that the time spent dealing with the split ring would be saved in the time not spent closing rings.

worthco.com and rosco.com are both splitring suppliers.

i called them and i seem to recall that they sell in batches of 5k rings, with a 1k minimum order, but anything other than a 5k order will cost extra.

My shirt of splits used about 100,000 rings. I got them from Rasco Rings. (Not Rosco). #4 splits are .220 id
I have yet to lose a ring in SCA combat. However the sharp little ends snag an all sorts of stuff. Rasco is willing make rings that are flat on the ends fo they don't snag on stuff. Just ask them.
After figgureing all the cost, I realized I could have made 2 Ti shirts.

Still, 30 pounds isn't bad to fight in. and it sucks up a lot of impact.

I was going to send Dr. T a PM but I figured he gets enough of them and maybe this way we won't all ask him the same questions over and over again. But if I'm wrong I'd be glad to PM Dr. T.

Thank you, everyone. So many fans... Smile

Sorry I missed your post, Alex - PM would definitely be better.

I have used split rings from 3 different sources, but will recommend only 2:
Rosco http://www.roscoinc.com/split_rings.html (they sell split rings in increments of 5000)
Worthco http://www.worthco.com/rings/spltring.html (they sell split rings in increments of 1000)

As for using split rings - I find them easier than butted, plus you do save time on not pre-opening/pre-closing them. You will need only 1 pair of pliers - either split ring pliers or small flatnose/roundnose and some sort of wedge to open up the rings (that's what I usually do).

Dr. T again great work on that shirt, just WOW but i guess there's a topic about it in the galery section (that I'll get round to shortly).
Would love to see some pics or article on how you weave with those rings, I even have a hard time getting my key onto one.
Love your work.
