I'd recommend looking around. If you have a farm supply store near, you can usually get galvanized steel at quite a good price (as far as amount of money is concerned). I can get 1/4 of a mile of galvy for about 20 bucks, and it's around 15-20 pounds per spool. You can usually get fair prices at welding supply stores as well. Prices will vary depending on what store you shop at, whether or not you can get it in bulk, your geographical location (stores in the boonies usually charge more). Of course, the type of metal you want will also play a role in how much you pay, eg. Stainless is more expensive than galvy.

There are always ways of getting free or cheap wire as well. I found a BUNCH of 14ga copper at a thrift store for like 5 bucks not too long ago. I still even have some naturally blackened galvy that I got at the dump.

I hope that was helpful.
