Ornamental seconded, thirded, or whatever...

KJ and miz, you're allowed to use the beads and scales within the guidelines of the contest! (It can and does make some projects much more interesting and challenging! I came in a close second in the hair ornaments contest with a beaded piece!)

So I propose (once again, as I did in former contest brainstorms)
UNUSUAL maille

as content topic. That may include everything that is woven mailleing techniques, independent of used materials (e.g. poptabs, scales, dried apple rings:)), but also unusual applications of standard maille. So there is a wide range of ideas that can be turned into a contest entry.

Human societies are like chain mail.
A single link will be worth nothing.
A chain is of use, but will break at the weakest link.
A weak weave will have the need to replace weak links.
A strong weave will survive even with weak links included.

Thanks Cynake. I didn't even think about that.

So my vote would be for Ornamental then.

No voting yet.

This is a brainstorming thread. How this works, is people make serious suggestions of what they would like the next contest to be. Any one person is not enough to get an item into the vote, one other person must "second" the suggestion for it to be valid. The winner of the previous contest automatically gets their vote seconded.

After the week is up, every suggestion that got seconded goes into a poll, and whatever wins is the next contest.

And yes, you're welcome to use beads, poptabs, whatever. But we don't allow making the theme itself about using a specific material.

I'd like to offer my support for unusual maille as well. Personally, I'm leaning towards using weaves in unconventional ways, but I'm not sure if there'd be enough time/uses for this to work. So I'll just second "unusual maille". Smile

As an aside, I'd love to see some dried apple ring maille. I'm not much of a cook, but that'd be impressive. And potentially tasty.

Hmmm. Would foodmaille being an acceptable possibility? It's not setting a specific material, though it is setting a group of specific materials to which everyone definitely has access.

Hmm... What about a 'material' theme?

As in: you have to make a piece entirely out of one metal, and make it to where it shows what it's made of.

if a single material was used, how would you hide what it's made of?

or did i miss something...?

My stainless steel vest shows that it's a stainless steel vest by being a stainless steel vest. I win!

Stainless steel vest.

If I'm imagining correctly, I don't think a 'material' theme would be specific enough.

Well, I meant that it has to express the material it was made of. (If that's possible)

I think the more I try to explain, the less it makes sense. Laughing

I'd like to propose colorful maille. How you get it colored is up to you, paint, anodizing, scales, beads... whatever!

Hmm... a chainmail DeLorean out of stainless steel.

There is no such thing as weave ownership. If someone produces a weave sample, they own that physical piece of mail, but not rights to the weave pattern itself.
