i've striped the zinc off a couple hundred galy rings before i used HCl (hydrochloric acid) which you can get at any store that sells pool supplies, in the form of muriatic acid it is less than $5 u.s ...

almost any hydroide will work... most drain cleaners have KOH in them which will work perfect buy if you want NaOH find drano crystals in the can those are NaOH

depends on the size of the pice an the density you want your scales to be you should scale a pice 1/20 or so and see how many that takes
