'New Edge of the Anvil' published by Skipjack Press is a good intro to general blacksmithing. It includes a bit about heat threating, which you'll need to make a decent knife.

Ever tried a pseudo-mobius ring with the same wire twisting around the loop in a simular fashion several times?

Those twisted wire rings look pretty nice, and probably strong for the wire used. But that has to be a whole lotta work for the number of rings, which is why I haven't done maille with them myself.

for weight-no-object strength, consider a hybred of dragonscale and dwarfsmaille, all links solid or welded. effectively 4 overlayed and interwoven sheets of snakeskin.

I'm wondering how padding behind the maille would effect results, absorbing impact energy without having to break rings.
