I took my dremel to my pliers and ground the teeth down, but not completely off, so that way the pliers still hold but don't scratch the rings.
What kind of rings are you using?
For getting rust off ...

Have you actually done that before? It sounds like a good idea, but it seems like they might break the rings on accident. How sturdy are they?

As long as you don't use diagonal cutters, you should get used to it. If you do use dc's, every freaking bone in your hand will shatter... I couldn't write for about 3 days the first time I tried cutt ...

Jewlers saws are great for silver, that's all I cut my maille silver rings, mostly 20 gu, but I'm working on an 18 gu one (swg - about 16 gu galvy size CURSE THOSE MF'ERS THAT DON'T PRINT MM FOR WIRE ...
