For elfweave a great size to practice is 14 ga 5/16. It's dense enough to hold well, yet not dense enough to be harder to make.

I'm biased towards elfsheet, but i still think it's the best choice, regardless. 14 ga 11/32 works great.

I used a hardwood (maple) jig and the hardness of maple was enough to make a rough groove all along the lenght of the wire, and rendered the coil unusable. A teflon surface might work better. Still ...
