I started with 20g 1/8" so to me it's kind of mid-range. I've worked with 24g 1/16" on up to 16g 1/2" and I must say I've enjoyed it all.

OTOH, DragonScale really does take a looong time. Beautiful ...

If you need a really thin mandrel (and it sounds like you do) try some piano wire. You can get it thin and it's still rigid enough to wind your wire without getting all bent up itself.
