It also depends on the mailler. At first, you'll just get some weaves and can weave them quickly, others will leave you bamboozled to start.

you might try taking one of these hefty metal rods to a machine shop to get one end milled down to fit into a 3/8" chuck.

Have you tried your local hardware store for metal rods?

I know you can get a 1/2" mandrel from TheRingLord.

Tractor Supply Co has 1/2 mile spools of 17 gauge(I'll check on the system in the morning, I want to say 1.2mm thick) galvy for about $30.
