I ended up using the cutting blade on my dremel to carve a hole through the mandrel shaft to make it work. I know it is a pretty ghetto setup, but it worked for me, and I plan to use it till it dies ...

well .. I have the dremmel ... and I think that drilling out the hole in the end will be the easiest way for me to get my wire started with as little waste as possible. it's kinda like wiring a guita ...
