I don't think it's the rings or your fault. It's just a thin oxide layer and scratches off easily. you just need the right tool for the job.

I personally had no idea that people have had this much trouble with this weave. I think that if you first just understand the weave by looking at pictures, it will make it easier.

You seem to have the weave in the headband turned 90 degrees. You are going to have to completely redo that. The "direction" of the weave has to go around the head, or horizontally, not vert ...
