Leverage.
With larger rings, the forces can be further from the 'fulcrum'.

Take a piece of your 2mm wire.
Try to bend it with pliers a few mm apart. Tricky, eh?

Thanks for the info.

The test piece was done with stainless steel, but I found a cheap offer of mild steel rings (16ga, 9.5mm ID). Would they be OK?
