DescriptionMy entry in Theme Contest #10: One Ring Size Baskets (January 8 - April 1, 2010).
16g 1/4" machine cut bright aluminum rings purchased from a ring supplier. European 5 in 1 (2) (European 5-in-1 Straight), Box Chain (E4 Boxchain), and primarily a Japanese 6 in 1 modification (Japanese 6-in-1x4), although there is some only 5 in 1x4, and it's all centered on a 7 in 1x4 queen ring :). Box Chain ribs capped with a three ring mobius.
So, I really like my result, despite it being kind of a random thought process from the start to the end. Bative's straight grained European 5 in 1 (2) is not a commonly used weave, but provided a density I liked for the basket walls, and when assembled, gives a little bit of a waviness to the panels.
For some reason, I decided I wanted 7 panels, which is also a little unusual. Round, square and hex all seem more common. Due to the ease with which Japanese weaves can be geometrically adjusted, that became my choice for the bottom of the basket. I ended up with a custom Japanese 6 in 1x4/Japanese 5 in 1x4 hybrid weave with a central 7 in 1x4 ring constructed specifically for this project. Superficially, it looks more 6 in 1, but a majority of the connections are 5 in 1. Using a stack of 4 horizontal rings in each gave the required/desired rigidity and stability to the bottom.
Box Chain ribs with Mobius caps are probably the most common aspect of this basket. Box Chain providing a regularly spaced set of potential connection points up it's length, and the Mobius just being a common decorative finish to the end of a chain.
