Tools for making Turk's Head Knot Rings (Images)

Motivated by the multi wired rings thread...
(linky http://www.mailleartisans.org/board/viewtopic.php?t=9421)

... I decided to try making a turk's head knot ring, to do this I needed some tools, I thought I'd document making them in the hopes it helps others.

19mm diameter dowel, Paper with 8 marks spaced out the length of the diameter of the dowel, etc.

Pattern for 3 lead ring (7 bights)
(re-size to suit dowel and print two copies)

Pattern for 5 lead ring (9 bights)
(re-size to suit dowel and print two copies)

Trim the pattern and check that when you wrap it around the Dowel the long lines overlap.

Tape one end of the paper to the dowel

Wrap the paper around the dowel and tape the other end in place

Drill through a block of wood and adjust so the drill will drill almost half way through the dowel.

Drill a hole at the end of each short line, and one hole the same length from
the end of the dowel along the long line.

Remove the paper and prepare the second paper.

Wrap the second paper further down the dowel with each line between the holes
already drilled.

Drill as before.

Remove paper and drill an additional hole further down the dowel.

Prepare a larger drill so it will only drill 1/4 of the way into the dowel.

Re-drill all the holes except the last with the larger drill.

Fit a metal pin in a hole.

Cut the metal pin into 18 short segments so that it sticks out by about 5mm.

Cut a pin the thickness of the first drill and wind some wire around it.

Check the fit of the new pin and its wrapping
(the wrapping should fit flush in the hole and help support the pin.)
If it is correct make another 17 of each.

Put the large pins in the large holes and a small pin in the small hole.

Here's a stich ripper that works well for lifting wires when making the rings.

And here's the link to making a ring using the rig/jig thingie

WOW! Thanks dude.
This is something I've wanted to try myself. I've done a lot of Chinese knotting some of which is exactly like Turk's Head but in cord.
Thanks again, this will be very useful. Very Happy

This is superb. Please submit this as an article!

That was a lot of pictures and must have taken a long time. Very methodical. No missed steps.

I might try my hand at one of these soon, now.

Thanks! encouragement like this is why I took all the photos, normally I'd only do the finished piece. I was concerned that it wasn't maille enough to do an article for, but so far no one's complained. Coif Smiley So I'll articleify it as soon as I have the time!
