Haven't made the board yet, no. Unfortunately, I've been focusing more lately on working on viable short-term product, cause I value rather highly having food and housing.
I'm actually thinking of rebuilding some portions of the pieces. The idea is to have aluminum on one side, and brass on the other. However, I realized they could be a lot cooler if each side had hilites of the other color. For instance, the aluminum side could have brass bases, and the aluminum king could have brass for the inside portion of his crown.
The original plan was to do these as a double-scale model for an eventual set in sterling silver and gold. This was based on the idea that 20 gauge is almost exactly half the size of 16 gauge (at least using TRL's sizes). Unfortunately, this isn't going to work out so well, because the pieces use a form of Celtic Visions Sheet in many portions with both 18 and 16 gauge wire which is very AR sensitive. The slight variation in the AR of the equivilent 20 and 22 gauge rings makes it too tight. I haven't completely given up hope, however, as I think I may be able to do it by replacing one of the 22 gauge ring types with an equivilent 24 gauge ring to make it work.
However, regardless of wether I can eventually make the smaller precious metal set, I'm going to complete this set first. I intend to put it up for sale, probably around $10,000, and I'm pretty sure I know exactly the market to sell it in for that price. _________________ - Mike Powell

About 4 hours on the pawn, about 5 or 6 on the rook, 7 or 8 on the knight, and a whole crapload on the king. Of course, any of them would take fewer hours to reproduce. _________________ - Mike Powell

Wow.
That's all I can say. As one of the originators of chainmail chess pieces, I can say that you have done an absolutely incredible job! Those are ten times better than mine.
I have to admit, I was eager to post pictures of my chess pieces after I designed them back in '03, because I was afraid someone would beat me to it..
I knew it was only a matter of time before we'd see more - also those by TripS420 ( http://www.mailleartisans.org/gallery/subcat.cgi?key=TripS420&mode=artist ). Welcome to the ranks! _________________ Chainmailbasket.com - 2010-07-11

You know, it means a lot to me to hear my work complimented by David Austin, whom I consider to be one of the great artists of modern chainmail. Thanks.
Did you see my Celtic Visions bowl, BTW? It's one of my few forays into chainmail basketry, and I'm quite fond of the results. It's rather small (maybe 4" across and 1" deep), but incredibly rigid. It's the second bowl I've made following that basic design. The first was a little larger, and contains bronze and brass, but it currently resides at my grandparent's house and I haven't had the chance to take pictures of it yet. _________________ - Mike Powell

Gosh yes!
That basket is cool also! I was going to comment on it as well, but was so taken by the chess pieces, it must have slipped my mind..
I think it's great to see yet another chainmail sculpturer here at m.a.i.l., and one with such talent too! It looks like I've got some catching up to do... _________________ Chainmailbasket.com - 2010-07-11

| Completely. Amazing. I am in awe! I am always intrigued by 3 dimensional work. What do you plan to make the board out of? |

I knew of thexnihil's chess set, if this is the one you mean:
http://members.tripod.com/thexnihil/maille2/chess.htm
But those pieces are wire sculpture, not chainmail.
I guess I meant articulated pieces. Or did thexnihil do chainmail chess pieces as well? If so, I'd like to see pics.
Actually though, there was someone who posted a whole chainmail chess set a few years before I did on the arador armour board. I know I wasn't the first. _________________ Chainmailbasket.com - 2010-07-11

Interesting. I don't suppose you could produce a link to that? I was under the impression that yours was still the only complete chainmail chess set. I'd be curious to see their designs. _________________ - Mike Powell
