Lorenzo got my donation.
He told me in the confirmation e-mail that:
"MAIL is now paid off on server fees
from last year and has a $30.00 start on the coming year."

Hmm... I guess I should check topics that I start every once in a while. Anyways I was just posting to say that I've paid up the webhosting fees so we're good to go for another 13 months.
I haven't been keeping a list of all the names who sent in donations, just tallying numbers, but it's a pretty short list. IIRC Sakredchao, Spider, David_Austin, Darken, and Cohort(cafepress). OK, looks like I might be forgetting a couple people. I can probably check my bank records to find out if necessary.
All in all when I paid the hosting bill MAIL had a positive balance of $79 US with me, so I covered the extra $40 for this years hosting fees. That's not a big deal so we'll call that even and start fresh again this year.
Since members are starting to contribute to MAIL financially, especially via paypal and cafepress I'm going to look into starting a bank account for MAIL. It'll make it easier for me to keep MAIL funds separate from my own finances. Also it would be nice to consolidate whatever money is in the paypal account with an actual bank account for MAIL, I'll look into that too.

Ooh, that might make donating easier for me.. (I hope)
I don't have a credit card (which excludes me from Paypal atm, until they revamp their system to allow savings accounts), and getting an international money order, or an international cheque is a poo, but hopefully transferring funds online won't be that bad.

| Would it be possible to have members donate items to sell either on this site or ebay or something to raise cash? |

this is something that we have to start looking at again..
how about, instead of posting a -thread- asking for donatons, we put it on the front page as a news item? so instead of just getting donations from people who read the board we maybe get donations from people who are using the site btu not the board. then we can edit the new item when it's paid for and thank everyone for helping out, to give some closure to the request for money until next year.
i hope to get a money order off pretty soon for the same amount as last year, but i have to go back to work first.
so.. when should we get on the begfest bandwagon?
i'm thinking march or april, which gives us a couple months to get our ducks in a row.

i just have a few questions
how much money do we need for this year, i noticed at the begining of the thread that it was 120 bucks.
and could donations be written off on taxes? or are we not a non-profit organization? either way i'll donate something.

Donations to MAIL cannot be written off on taxes because it isn't a federally recognized non-profit corporation. To become one would require more effort (and alot more cash!) than the membership has thus far been willing to provide.

We need roughly $125US to cover our hosting and domain costs...

What would we need to upgrade to something a bit more robust/faster and with better customer service? I?m thinking of how slow things seem lately and of that 505 error outage not too long ago. Also the database must be getting huge judging by the numbers posted on the home page. There are now over two thousand five hundred gallery images and more than sixty thousand posts on the boards. Might this be a time to think about moving to a higher level, provided we can pay for it?
My local NPR station has been ?cutting days off? their pledge drives (actually they?re advertising early during commercial breaks which really makes them longer? ) by having people pledge early. The goal for the week is $X and for every .142 $X they get before the start of the drive they knock a day off. In keeping with that, I can probably pledge @ .2 $X of our estimated goal, or about $25. When is the ?drop dead date? and how do I get you the money?
BTW: Is this annual, bi-annual, quarterly, or over some other term?
Edit: This just occurred to me: If we could get eleven (11) people to pledge a buck a month ($1 x 12) that would be slightly more than the $125 estimated.
Edit2: Math not Zathras' strong suit...

I'd like nothing better than to change hosting, but the thought of trying to move this site, and all the code, and all the databases, makes me very sleepy....
