Hey Folks,
Just checking in quickly... Most of you probably haven't noticed, and that is a good thing, but we've had a VERY LARGE volume of spam signups lately. Likely all automatically created, and possibly from the same place.
They all display similar patterns, signing up first, then altering their userinfo after-the-fact to include malicious links, or sell things...
I'm trying my best to stay on top of these, and nuke them as I see them signup, but if I miss one, or if anyone is PM'd by one of these (likely automated) accounts... Please let me know, and provide me with a username, so I can nuke them from orbit.

After a month of swatting these account down at a rate of 3-5 a day, I finally had enough, and re-wrote the Submission script... It was one of the few remaining fully 2.0 scripts on the site. (The remainded of the CGI scripts are 2.5)
It's now up to snuff (that is, part of MAIL 3.0, and made of PHP win), and contains a proper reCaptcha image.

Captcha = you know... the stupid pics of numbers and letters you have to read and type in to proof that you're a human being (and you can't read them half the time xD) [the thing about 'stuipid pics' is not intended as an critisism against DL's action... sadly, it is needed...]
and what he means is that there are programs out there which can read those pics and make it possible for spam-bots to register and spam on captcha-secured pages [implying the fact that the numbers of spam-accounts didn't drop after upgrading the site].
At least that is what I think he wanted to say... and I hope I made myself clear (I'm not very good at this, not even in german xD) |
