Weave Study Threads
Purpose:
Go more in depth to specific weaves as a community.
Add information to weaves, including:

    Pattern Information

This month we will be/are/were studying: Tao 4
Tutorials:

Related Weaves:
(For brevity, I excluded all the higher number n-around-variants)

Tao 3 (Note that it appears different - using a central ring, while Tao 4+ do not in the same way)
Tao 5 (Note that the center ring doesn't appear anymore in the weave image, but does in the gallery images)
    Tower of Tao 3
    Fireman's Hold 4
    Not Tao 4

This is one of the groupings that really struck me as odd.
There's currently Tao 3-8 in the library.

Tao 3 has 3 clear layers with the unit: 1 3 1.
Tao 4 has 3 clear layers as well: 4 1 4.
Tao 5 has 1 horizontal layer: 5.
Tao 6 has 1 horizontal layer: 6.
Tao 7 has 1 horizontal layer: 7.
Tao 8 has 1 horizontal layer: 8.

Now one might be quick to say that it's in the fireman's hold style, but...
Fireman's Hold 4 has 2 horizontal layers: 2 2. (They're staggered).
Fireman's Hold 6 has 2 horizontal layers: 3 3.

The labeling gets even messier with gallery images included.

This is what a single unit of Tao 4 would look like if it was constructed the same way as Tao 3. The orbital rings need to be large in order to have four connections instead of three. It's not perfectly ideal though because the four horizontal outside rings don't stay in one spot

The Tao 4:

.080" (2.0mm) bright aluminum

  • 4 large, orbital rings
    7/16" (11.1mm) mandrel
    .477" ID
    AR of 6.0
  • 2 center and 4 corner rings
    5/16" (7.94mm) mandrel
    .341" ID
    AR of 4.3

This is what a single unit of Tao 3 would look like if it was constructed the same way as an individual Tao 4 unit.

Inverted Tao 3

.062" (1.6mm) wire:

  • Center ring + 3 orbitals (stainless steel):
    25/64" (9.92mm) mandrel
    .432" ID
    AR of 7.0
  • Corner rings (bright aluminum):
    21/64" (8.33mm) mandrel
    .361" ID
    AR of 5.8
