OK, I am brand new here but looking to increase my participation.

I have some special order rings on the way and they are 18ga (AWG) with 6mm inside diameter.

I want to use them to create a 3 in 3 Viper Basket Weave Chain.

Trying to figure out (calculate) what size larger ring would be ideal to have the weave as tight as possible while still preserving free motion/movement. Not too stiff!

Welcome. I haven't tried the weave yet but this thread may help:

Thank you, yes I did read that, but was unable to get specifics on best ratios and sizes to use for a 3 in 3 weave using 18ga (AWG 1mm) with 6mm ID.

The small rings have to fit inside the large rings. So I'd look for 18awg rings with an ID just smaller than 4mm.

I might try this weave too when my new rings arrive.

Simply going off of what sizes ChainOfBeauty posted, in 20awg they used 4.5 and 7.0mm ID to get a 3-3 viper basket.

This gives AR values of roughly 5.63 and 8.75 respectively. So for 18awg my guess would to use ID of about 5.6mm and 8.75mm.

If it must fit inside ID 6mm... You're probably looking at an ID somewhere between 3.6 - 3.9 mm. While 4mm would work in theory, there is springback to consider as well as the width of the 3-3 chain.

Let us know if you manage to get it to work Smile
