Welcome. I want to insert an ornament of gold plated rings in his chain mail (cross) and I'm having a problem with the staining of the steel under the gold. Maybe someone already faced with such and maybe something to recommend?
I would appreciate any help.

Anodization is probably better than painting.

But you already painted those links. Moist air is getting through, or under, your gold paint, and it's rusting your steel. Maybe another coating of gold paint would help. Perhaps clear-coat spray on top of that gold paint might prevent more rusting.

Clear-coat is like paint with no color. Usually found as spray-paint.

This problem disappears with galvanized wire; the zinc coating on the wire makes a pretty good primer too.
