Gallery submission restrictions : questions

1) The gallery and weave image size limits seem to have been around for well over a decade. Is it time to up the sizes to reflect the high bandwidth capacity of the internet? I've been frustrated that I have to compress submissions to such low image quality lately. Is it a question of site storage/bandwidth limitations? If so, I'd be happy to donate again to offset the cost.

2) Why no links in gallery submissions? The submissions are curated prior to posting by admins, so unfortunate (and inappropriate) links would be purged... but there are often times I want to link to an external gallery providing additional detail that won't eat up M.A.I.L.'s bandwidth.

3) One of the gallery admins requested that I add additional detail in the form of pictures for a gallery submission... how do I add pictures to a description of a gallery submission? Should I submit additional gallery images and reference them to each other somehow? Erm... how do without links?

Our site coder has been harassed to the point of becoming inactive. Handing the "keys" to another site coder won't happen anytime soon. The person has to be someone we trust.

To be honest, I've never had a problem submitting a decent picture within the limits. I've seen many many others submit fantastic pictures of their work within the current limits. I don't know what to tell you other than I doubt those limits will change anytime soon.

The gallery is for pictures with descriptions. It's not meant to be a link-farm. Links have a tendency to die. I really don't want a gallery full of links to dead pages or to other sites. Links can also be changed to send you to advertising (for chainmaille to porn to whatever), which is also unwanted. You are welcome to take a close-up or two of the same piece and explain what you are specifically talking about.

I'm not sure what you are referring to. You may have been asked for pictures that better showed what the description was about? I've often PMed someone for at least minimum details like what the item is, what materials were used, and what weave is used. As I said above, you can submit some close-ups and describe them. However, the description doesn't have to be overly detailed.

This may be an interesting read. I think it is the previously "most recent" discussion of size limits.

I've refrained from putting more volume into my gallery for a few reasons, the primary being that M.A.I.L. isn't my personal territory to spam stuff at... kinda respecting the territory, yanno?

The image size thing has been a secondary concern. I've had trouble getting good image quality out of some of my compression attempts, mostly because I think I'm a terrible photographer (start with crap, end with... crap.)

Mostly I was curious about the linking policy. It's relatively easy to post detail albums to imgur, FB, etc to detail construction/progress/evolution, they handle automagic resizing, etc... I would think linking to those locations AND locking edits (since everything is curated by an admin) might be sufficient... but you make valid points, I guess it's probably come up a dozen times before.

As for the lack of coder... well, I'd volunteer myself if I was more familiar with the backend, but I won't start waving my hand around unless I knew I could handle it. 20+ yrs of software dev, aye, but that's made me cautious and realistic about the time and effort involved with supporting a site full-time. I'd much rather just support the site financially if necessary, but I haven't seen a budget report in a couple years and got th impression there was already a surplus of funds.

What I'd REALLY like to do is support the curation aspect in the gallery/weaves section, since that seems to be a bit slow at times, even if it was helping with the game of "compare this weave submission with prior subs to check for duplicates". ... I dunno. I feel a certain obligation (and regret that I drifted away a bit after LC & the CBB nightmare) to kick in some effort towards the folks that started this and keep it running somehow, just not sure how to contribute.

Anyway, the thread linked above was food for thought.

If you want to provide a link to better images of your creations I would recommend highlighting the content using the "Homepage" section of your user profile. Currently you are linking to http://www.cinnibar.net/ in this section which displays Apache Test Page content. This does not seem like it is a productive link to have in your M.A.I.L. profile.

Just my 2 cents as a customer service rep. Fix what is in your control while waiting for enhancement requests to be addressed.

Well, that's not a productive site to have linked... I haven't hosted content there for years. Thanks for pointing that out.

Sorry it took so long for me to see this I started teaching again and that has taken up all of my free time.

I believe I was the one that made the request you are referring to. I can't remember what piece it was, but I was thinking of a "picture in picture" type image that could show off some of the things you were talking about. For example a weave submission that I did.

Sorry I wasn't clear and I know there are other examples in the gallery this was the only one I could think of in the short time before kiddos come in again.
