Question about ManowarDave's inlay tut.

Hi all,

I'm quite new to doing inlays, I've only done one of a fairly basic pattern and it was easily done without using any sort of software, but now I'd like to graduate to a more complex one.

In using ManowarDave's tutorial, I've hit a snag. Whenever I try to render anything while using IGP2POV, I get the message:

"An unhandled exception has occurred in your application. If you click continue, the application will ignore this error and attempt to continue. If you click quit, the application will be shut down immediately.

Object reference not set to an instance of an object"

I've sent ManowarDave a PM, but considering he was last online over a year ago, I thought it would be easier to just ask the general community. I consider myself quite illiterate on these sorts of problems, so any help or links to old threads would be very much appreciated.

Thanks for any info.

I've never used IGP2POV, but I'll try to help anyway.
The message "Object reference not set to an instance of an object" is most probably due to a programming error.

1) Check if you're using the latest version of IGP2POV.
http://www.zlosk.com/pgmg/igp/downloads.html

2) Check if you're using the latest version of POV-Ray.

3) If it still fails, you can contact directly Zolsk, the creator of IGP (his e-mail is in the above link).
Tell him exactly which steps leads you to this error.
And tell him for me to look for non-initialized pointers and for objects still used after being deleted.

Thanks for the help Shirluban, I only downloaded both programs the other day, so they should be the latest versions.

Both programs were written in VB.NET. No pointers to worry about.

I haven't updated anything in years, so my test system is still running POV-Ray 3.6. It's possible that something may be up with the current POV-Ray 3.7, though I don't recall previous version updates breaking anything.

The other thing is that my programs both use the .NET Framework 1.1, which is also a few versions behind the latest and greatest. You need to make sure that the older framework is installed.

Thanks for the reply Zlosk, I haven't had enough time yet to email you. I'll install the older framework and get back to this thread with the results.

I appreciate the help guys.

Sadly, the same message still comes up. After I tried opening IGP2POV with the older framework, I was told to use a different file format, but still it comes up with the "object reference not set to an instance of an object" error.

Hmmm. Do any of the sample files work, or do you get the same error message with those too? If the sample files work but your file does not, then I'd like you to email me your file (mailler at zlosk dot com) so I can try to figure out what is happening.

Zlosk, I don't know what sample files you mean.

You stated that you downloaded both programs. If you've extracted both, then the test files would be located in the \IGP\img folder.

Nope, the sample files seem to be coming up with the same error as well.

Does the error occur when you select "Create POV File", "Render", or both?

The error only seems to occur when I select "render".

If you don't have POV-Ray installed, then the rendering will fail, and "Object reference not set..." error will occur. If you do have POV-Ray installed, then the issue is something with how IGP2POV is attempting to run POV-Ray, and I'll look into it. However, I do have a workaround in the meantime.

1. Use IGP2POV to create a POV file (which you've already done).

2. Open up the POV file in Notepad (or your favorite text editor).

3. Look for the command line switches. (Line 8 of the file, should read similar to "+w388 +h405". This is the info on the width and height of the final render.)

4. Start up POV-Ray.

5. Open the POV file in POV-Ray.

6. Enter the command line switches into the command line switch textbox in POV-Ray.

7. Render in POV-Ray.

It's quite late now, so I'll try it tomorrow, but thank you very much for bearing with me, Zlosk.

Success! That's awesome Zlosk, thank you very much. I think now I just need to play around with a few more things to get it right. But I repeat, thank you very much, and you too Shirluban.
