I am getting an order together from TRL and have about $10 left to reach my goal. I want to make regular scale flowers as well as the overlapped flowers here- http://www.mailleartisans.org/articles/articledisplay.cgi?key=150998#
What ring size/s are needed to make a 5 and 6 petal overlapped flower?
I have
18g 1/4 own
18g 3/16 own
18g 5/32 own
19g 5/32 buying
16g 1/4 buying
I tried using 18g 3/16 as the center and 18g 1/4 but i could only fit 3 scales.
Also is there any other common sized rings I should get? I really like the 18g 3/16 myself but only have 3 size rings to compare lol. |

I don't know what "regular scale flowers" are.
Considering your rings' sizes, I assume you're going to make flowers with small scales.
For the 5 petals overlapped flowers, I've used:
- Petal rings: 16 SWG 3/8" ID
- Center rings: 16 SWG 1/4" ID, and 16 SWG 3/8" ID
You may want to use slightly bigger rings, because the 5 petals flowers I made are really tight and have a bowl shape.
By really tight, I mean the flower shown in the article you've linked is loose in comparison.
Edit: In fact, not so. I've made three of these flowers and only one have this problem. The two others are pretty loose actually. For the problematic one it appears that the scales' hole is a bit farther away from the edge.
For the 6 petals overlapped flowers:
- Petal rings: 16 SWG 3/8" ID
- Center rings: 16 SWG 5/16" ID, and 16 SWG 7/16" ID
They look nice and "flat".
All in aluminum, bright or anodized, from TRL. |

Oops yes the small scales. By "normal" I mean these ones http://theringlord.com/images/products/kits/KIT-SCALEFLWR-AA.jpg
What size rings would work a 5 scale like the one in the article? I'm bad at sizes/numbers in general...so just go by suggestions and thank you |

TRL sells instructions for those. Not that expensive and then you will always know what sizes to buy after that.

I want to make them and have, but mine are way wobbly I used all 18g 5/32 3/16 and 1/4. I think with the rings I have and plan on buying will give me the correct ring sizes to make a more sturdy one.
Also I am using stainless steel...does that affect size that much? |

I've made a little variation, doubling the big scales with small ones, using these rings' sizes:
From the center to the border:
16 SWG 1/4" ID, x1
18 SWG 1/4" ID, x10 (or 16 SWG for a stiffer flower without the small scales)
16 SWG 3/8" ID, x10 (5 on each side)
18 SWG 3/16" ID, x5
All in bright and AA from TRL.
Without the small scales, the ARE wobbly.
I don't have TRL instructions, so it may not be the official sizes.
Here are some pics, so you can see how it turns out with the given sizes:
