Before you start, I know the sticky thread about pictures in the gallery discussion, and the guidelines at the gallery section. Actually, that's why I'm posting this question.
I have abeautiful inlay I created. And it works well in one of my vests (picture maybe soon). But I want to post it in thearticles section as an inlay-article.
The problem is: with 4323 rings the picture is too large.
I have already resized it to the minimum practical size.
The original Corel-drawing is 150k+ and prbably useless for the site.
A JPG version is 400k+. I've tried more compression and it looks really bad.
A GIF is 150k+. Good to look at, but according to the guidelines still too large.
Lastly, PNG. Just 73k in all. Crisp and clear. But PNG is not in the guidelines.
If I want to do the inlay justice, and show it clear enough that someone else can use it, it needs to be either large or a different format.
Nobody wants large pictures with large download times.
I undestand that several internet browsers support PNG. At lest my Internet Explorer 6.0 does.
Therefor I vote to also allow PNG graphics.
Are there any problems with PNG that I don't know about?

| I would suggest posting a thumbnail in JPG, then linking it to the PNG - yes, it's supported by the newest browsers, but a large proportion of people who view my website (I figure it's representative) view it using browsers which don't have PNG support. |

Linking off site.
In that case, where do I leave the other (GIF) pic.
I do have a site. But its address can change, leaving M.A.I.L. with a dead link. I'd like the article to be a bit more permanent.
Still, not a bad idea.
Any other options?

To be honest, I'm not sure whether the site software can handle .png files or not. Rather than me spending a day digging through code, why don't you try to post one in the gallery? That way it will show up in the approve queue, and I can see if it will work...

A quick test.
A portion of the inlay, as a PNG file.
picture is at: http://www.geocities.com/alex_de_jong/maille/Malien_4in1_draak003_test.png
The picture link is to a file on my website (the picture is only part of the webspace, not the site itself).
Btw. Is this the only way to get a picture in a post, or can I include a picture *in* the post itself?

Just my luck,
Geocities just blocked the link in my previous message, as they say that it's not wanted to link to a picture on their webspace
So for now, copy-paste the link in a new browser to see the image.
And my question remains: can I put an image *inside* a message.

P.S.: I just saw (while writing this post) that the image is visible in the 'Topic review'-box. Probably a new link they havent blocked yet. |

(BBcode off, HTML on)
Looks like you got the format:
