It can be frustrating, even the same alloys can be different colors.

Depends on the size needed.
Theringlord.com sells punched rings that work well.

Many of the chainmail importers also sell chainmail rings, rivets, and solid rings by weight or count.

It takes a bit of experamenting to find something your happy with.
A few things to try.
Shorter rivets, it should make things less bendy.

Sounds like your doubling the diameter every other row.
To get a half sphere shape the increase is less as you continue.
