Though heraldry colors may be nice, I would be more concerned with choosing colors that have a large enough difference in brightness that even people with color blindness can follow the scheme.

mithrilweaver's solution looks very similar to my solution (see http://www.mailleartisans.org/board/viewtopic.php?t=12481), other than mine uses more ring sizes to spread out the expansion.
