If you are determining size as X rings by Y rings then for any given patch you will need (X x Y) pre-closed rings and (X-1)x(Y-1) open rings.

Eg a patch 8 rings by 16 will need (8x16)=128 closed an ...

Corrosion due to combination of different metals may be an issue, but either the colorful anodised surface layer (AnoAl, AnoTi, AnoNb) does deal with that (as it's electrically insulating)
